“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
From the time he began pounding out melodies on a blue, battery-operated toy piano at the age of 5, it was clear that God had an extraordinary plan for Tab Beechler’s life. Six recordings and thousands of performances later, Tab is a celebrated pianist/vocalist and seasoned worship leader whose words and music have brought Hope, encouragement and God’s Truth to countless listeners.
Growing up on a farm in rural Indiana, it didn’t take long for others to notice Tab’s gift of transposing melodies by ear anytime he was near a keyboard. Opportunities to accompany church and school choirs became plentiful, until, at the age of 15, Tab was invited to join a regional gospel group, The Gospel Crusaders. Tab’s abilities continued to garner attention, leading to stints playing for the Northmen, and the award-winning family ensemble, The Perrys. In 1990 Tab felt called to return home to Indiana, where he could have a strong homebase from which to minister—this time as a solo artist.
Tab’s full-fledged solo ministry grew quickly, as he performed and led worship at churches; youth retreats; and adult and marriage conferences across the upper Midwest. As demand for his music grew, so did his discography, which includes his 1993 self-titled debut; 1996’s Dare To Be Different; 1998’s It’s Time; 2000’s Issues Of Life; and The Early Works, an instrumental collection with selections from his previous recordings.
In 2002, Tab stepped out of the spotlight in order to devote full attention to his walk with God. “I call this year my ‘Season of Selah,’ because the word selah means ‘to pause and reflect,’” Tab explains. “I came in off the field and God basically turned off the music for a year. I thought I had God figured out, but I learned I needed Him in a way I hadn’t before; I had to trust Him. He reassured me that the hurt I was going through was going to bring Glory to His name.”
This “Season of Selah” not only led to Tab finding new passion and purpose for his music ministry, but it also was the impetus for what would become, eight years later, his signature recording to date. Aptly entitled Season of Selah, the very personal collection features modern worship standards, timeless hymns, and contemporary selections—all of which have had a profound impact on Tab’s life. Season of Selah not only captures the artist’s unique keyboard interpretations, but more importantly, the message of Truth he wishes to convey through his music.
“All these songs are about the Greatness of God,” Tab says. “Because it was during my own ‘Season of Selah’ that I was able to rediscover God’s greatness for myself.”
The project features such beloved hymns as “When Morning Gilds The Skies,” “Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us,” and “I Sing The Mighty Power of God,” a personal favorite of Tab’s. But equally at home on the track list are the modern worship standards “Indescribable” and “God Of Wonders,” songs he led regularly while serving as Worship Pastor for Auburn (Indiana) Church of the Nazarene from 2008 - 2010. The album’s highlight, however, is the final selection, “His Love Is Greater,” which has profound meaning to the artist. “I will never forget the first time I heard the song,” Tab remembers. “I cried as I listened to the words, ‘His love will not be denied; His love is greater than all your sin.’ I couldn’t think of a better way to close the record, to offer listeners a chance to respond to that Love.”
Although those attending a Tab Beechler concert will be sure to hear the artistry and creativity evident on Season of Selah, they will be left with much more. For Tab, each performance or opportunity to lead worship is simply a means to impart something far greater: God’s Truth as expressed in His Word. “I try to begin each performance by communicating the authority of God,” he shares. “Throughout my concerts, I quote heavily from Scripture because I want to show how these songs relate to the Word. I want those in the audience to see and experience Jesus through this music, to be reminded of His love for us.”
“I am called to connect with people and to help connect people to God,” Tab concludes. “We are all at different places on this journey, and if an experience I have had can bring others encouragement, or can bring them closer to Him, it’s all been worth it. Although I hope the audience will feel like they have been able to get to know me by the close of the evening, ultimately, my prayer is that I have been a vessel to help them know Him better.”
The destiny of a brown-haired boy from Indiana that began with a blue toy piano, continues to unfold night after night, performance after performance, as young and old alike are not only captivated by Tab Beechler’s artistry—but encouraged by his heart: a heart whose mission is to share God’s Truth and bring Him Glory, through the gifts He has so freely given.
